PeaceMaker

PeaceMaker was established in 1997 by some of its current Directors who were, at the time, young people themselves. The organisation was founded to help overcome the fear, prejudice and segregation prevalent across Oldham. This division was apparent through the segregation of communities and the lack of services encouraging positive cross-community engagement. The organisation works to counter racial and religious prejudices.

PeaceMaker's work was originally targeted at children and young people, but the current programme also works with adults. PeaceMaker is now recognised at a Government level and advises others on community cohesion issues. The organisation runs both a Schools and Community programme.

The Schools programme works at all four Key Stages of the National Curriculum. It is specifically designed to support children and young people to better understand and challenge prejudice and discrimination. This work supports children and young people to develop the skills, ability and understanding to positively engage in a diverse community.

The Communities programme has been developed over the last ten years. It brings local people together, to explore diversity in a way that overcomes barriers. It promotes cross-cultural understanding particularly in areas of misunderstanding and potential conflict. PeaceMaker also runs a Strategic Programme that includes bespoke cultural diversity training for both senior management professionals as well as general staff.
