Aik Saath

Aik Saath, meaning 'together as one' in Hindi, Urdu and Panjabi, is an independent charity which aims to promote peace and racial harmony within the local community of Slough and its surrounding areas.

It was set up in response to rising tensions between young people from the Sikh, Hindi and Muslim communities in the area which resulted in a period of serious Asian youth violence in 1996-97.

Aik Saath offers training and workshops in conflict resolution and anti-racism to a variety of groups and organisations including young people at school and community workers. The aim of this training is to raise awareness of conflict; looking at the roots of conflict, how conflict may manifest itself, the effects of conflict and methods aimed towards resolving and dealing with conflict. The training also aims to promote self-esteem and confidence in young people.

School training is conducted once a week for one hour and lasts between 6-10 weeks and is delivered by the Aik Saath peer training team. The peer training team is made up of young people aged between 13-25. This team of young people are mostly made up of young Asians from the Sikh, Muslim and Hindu communities due to the historical context from which Aik Saath originated, but this does not mean that Aik Saath is exclusively open to young Asians and it encourages young people from all communities to be a part of the project.
