Keighley Association Women and Children's Centre

Keighley Asian Women and Children's Centre (KAWACC) runs a number of projects which bring together young people of different faiths and backgrounds. Staff work hard to tackle issues of race, culture and stereotyping through a mixture of schemes and youth work.

The centre recently pioneered a community cohesion residential scheme for 12 Bangladeshi, Pakistani and White teenagers with backing from the Duke of Edinburgh Award. This provides an excellent opportunity for the participants to meet each other, work together and develop lasting friendships across communities.

KAWACC also run a youth involvement project, and participants in this project were recently involved in a 20 week pilot project 'Bradford lives'. This was a film project organised by Community Speak, which invited four groups of young people aged between 11-19 from diverse communities across the district to share and challenge stereo types. The project involved allowing young people to develop photography skills, interview techniques and data collection, networking skills and presentation skills.

Staff at the centre also encourage young people to participate in projects engaging global issues, for example in response to the recent devastating earthquake in Pakistan a group of boys at the centre organised a football tournament as a fundraising activity. As the centre is accessed by a diverse group of young people such events also further a community cohesion aim.
