The Multi-faith media group, originally known as Youth Extra, is a fantastic initiative which aims to train young people from across the faiths in media skills. This involves working with a group of approximately eight young people between the ages of 17-25 to produce radio, print and web features, to encourage being proactive in media and to seek opportunities to do this locally and further afield.
The media group conduct interviews, research different issues, for example those around interfaith and community cohesion, create documentaries, write articles for local newspapers and websites and make presentations to other organisations within the community and from overseas.
Some examples of their work include a presentation at the local town hall and input into ¹Divine®, an interfaith performance at a local theatre. This was centred on celebrating multi-faith, multi-cultural Leicester, by bringing together various art forms, performances and talks. Through this the youth group could reach out to a larger, more diverse audience, relate their experiences and express what they envision for Leicester.
The group also contributes to the interfaith youth page on the Ïwhere I liveÓ section of the BBC Radio Leicester website, www.bbc.co.uk/leicester/faith.
The participants are from Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities and they have recently moved their base to the studio facilities at Youth Voice. The project has been running for over 2 year's and has been a great success, this year it was short-listed and commended in the prestigious Sandford St Martin Religious Radio Awards held at Lambeth Palace in November.
