British Museum - Living in a Multi-faith Society

Diversity and Dialogue and the British Museum worked in partnership on a two-part project over the summer of 2005. The British Museum houses a huge range of artefacts from different faiths and cultures all over the world.

17 young people from seven different faiths worked together over a week in their summer holidays, to create a trail around the Museum themed around 'Living in a Multi-faith Society'. They discussed their own faiths and how this affected the way they lived their lives and they talked about living in London today. They also worked with curators to learn about certain periods in history and about the way that different religions have interacted in the past. They then selected objects from the Museum's collections and wrote their own interpretations of them. The objects reflect on living in a multi-faith society and use the past to teach us lessons about how to live today.

The project culminated on 2 October when a hundred young Londoners came together to explore the faith trail and participate in a conference about Living in a Multi-faith London. They discussed their values and thought about what it means to be the citizen of a city like London. They took part in workshops on religions, the media, conflict resolution and even dance. They listened to presentations and talked in small discussion groups. It was a hectic but very successful day in which the participants learnt a great deal about the values of living in a multi-faith and multi-ethnic city.
