For the past four years Hounslow SACRE and the Institute of Education have been running an annual sixth form conference on 'Women in Religion' for schools in the borough of Hounslow. This event is organised by the Advisor of RE for Hounslow Council, Lesley Prior, and run by trainees at the Institute of Education.
The one day event of workshops and seminars address the topic from different angles, past workshops have included religious dress and fashion, 'Bollywood women and Hindu deities' and honour killings. Students are also encouraged to discuss issues of being a young person of faith and belief in modern society and share their experiences of RE lessons.
This year the event will be extended involve a greater number of schools and sixth formers and will be based around the theme of 'Faith in the Capital'. Students will come from a wide variety of religious traditions and backgrounds and include those who are interested and motivated to talk about RE and those who are not. The event aims to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to explore their faith, values and beliefs in a stimulating and thought-provoking environment.
