NICHS is a charitable organisation which exists to improve community relations in Northern Ireland by working with young people. The majority of young Catholic and Protestants in Northern Ireland live in segregated communities and attend separate schools. They rarely have an opportunity to meet, there is no opportunity to question others' views and perceptions, or confront the prejudice, distrust and fear of the other tradition.
NICHS runs programmes designed, through the provision of opportunities for long-term contact, to promote reconciliation and mutual understanding between young people and their communities.
NICHS operates four core projects and works with approximately 400 young people each year. Each project has the same fundamental aim, to create trust, understanding and tolerance between young members of communities and thus build sustainable relationships that will support any political agreements. The four projects are The Link Project, The Community Partnership Project, The Youth Resource Centre Project and The Young Leaders Project. All projects target young people from marginalised and vulnerable communities whose lives are most directly affected by the conflict, or who are most resistant to engaging in dialogue with members of the other group.
