The Basement Project

The Basement Project is an innovative youth centre in Burnley which provides a new and exciting non-alcoholic night club and cyber cafe for the young residents of the area. Located in the town's Central Methodist Church on Hargreaves Street, the centre also helps young people develop their skills by enabling them to express themselves and gain self-confidence through a range of activities. These include practical painting, music and DJ-ing, developing a website and awareness sessions on issues such as drug and alcohol abuse.

Local youngsters are encouraged to have an active role in the design, management and control of the centre. From construction of the bar area to the painting of the centre, all the work developed to date has been completed solely by young people aged between 11 and 17 years of age.

Funded by the Urban 2 European regeneration programme the Basement project encourages young people from different areas to mix and learn about each other to reduce the likelihood of territorial resentment and the likelihood of anti-social behaviour. It is attended by young people of a variety of faith and non-faith backgrounds and provides the opportunity for shared dialogue and understanding.

The club operates at the following times:

  • Tues & Thurs, 7.15pm- 9.30pm
  • Non alcoholic club night (13-19) Tues & Thurs, 7.30pm - 9.30pm
